A wall is another way of saying “Art block” because it blocks the inspiration that flows from the heart. When we limit ourselves, we are stopping that waterfall of inspiration. The limits place a dam around the fountain and creates “can’t” or “don’t like” in return we become unproductive or we begin to over criticize our art.Art is a free natured action; it is a rhythm, a song, a melody without the music. It should not be confined to what you can and cannot do, or to what everyone should think you should do. Whatever you draw, write, paint should come from your heart. David did not just write psalms he ENJOYED writing them as well as singing them. That is what we should do. We should delight ourselves in whatever we do. Do not care about what people think. Do not think; just do. If you have an idea, it’s fine to seek opinions, but don’t let anyone discourage you from whatever you feel led to do. An artist doesn’t have walls, they have a foundation, but their inspiration is plenty. Destroy the walls of your Art.
If you don’t know where to start, start with self-criticism. Except your good as well as your bad. If you don’t like something, take note of it and improve on that part. If you hate how you draw hands, improve them. If you say, “you can’t”, smack your hand until you say, “you can”. If you don’t know how to use Photoshop, experiment. There is no right or wrong way to do your art. To those who think they have “arrived” in art, you still have a long way to go. No matter what you do, you’re still learning even if you’re an art teacher or you have several degrees. You deceive yourself when you think you’re a “master.” To those who hate your art, be patient. I even had my share of impatience. Not fun, but art any type is a very patient and growing process.
Next, you should learn from those who inspire you, not take their habits. However, because this artist has a million plus people buying from them, they had no education, and they live at home with momma. Doesn’t mean you should too. Everyone is different straight down to the way he or she lives. So what if this artist you admire has prismas, copics, wacom, and all top-notch media. Doesn’t mean you should go and spent your money on things you probably wouldn’t use a lot. It’s not the medium that makes art beautiful; it’s your heart that does. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t spend your money on what you want to try. I’m saying don’t buy just because you see this person has it. However if you do want to try your hand at a medium buy small quantities of that product.
This also is covered in the next topic, Experimentation. If you want to try a different area of art, go ahead. Do NOT limit yourself to an area of art just because of those who like it. You better tear down that wall! Some people may not approve of the themes you pick but who’s drawing the picture? Tear down that wall. For example, I love the Book of Esther(Bible), I have watched One Night with a King over and over. (I practically claimed the DVD from my dad.) If I wanted to draw a scene, I would because that’s what’s in my heart. That’s what I love. I don’t care who criticize what I’m referencing from and that’s how we ALL should feel about whatever art or theme we try to do.
Dream higher, if you don’t have a goal, set one even if art is your hobby. Hobbies DO get boring from time to time, that’s why we should strive to make it interesting. It was interesting when you first held a pencil, so why should it be stressful now? Stress is a result of a wall in our life. BREAK IT. You should be able to express yourself in whatever mood you have. Yes, even if you’re depressed, beloved. Don’t deceive yourself drawing something happy when your mad as the Devil. (You shouldn’t be though) Instead, channel your emotion from it. I have many sketchbooks with different faces in it, sad as well as happy, angry, embarrassed, depressed. If you wanted to know how I felt in the past look at my character’s faces in my sketchbook. It didn’t have to be a full picture, just a face.
Don’t think of art as something you have to do but something you WANT to do. Your art teacher gives you an assignment, you get several commissions and it’s boring. But don’t think of it as that. You can :
1. Experiment
2. Experiment
3. EXPERIMENT.
How do I experiment? Take a clean sheet of paper, draw the subject, copy as many as you want, color the copies the way you want, draw the copies the way you want, do what you want to the copies. You may end up finding a new technique and end up completing the original with a new and better way. (And everyone is happy. well sort of. )
Ah, this leads me to another subject, commissions. Just because you don’t get as many commissions as little Johnny or Suzie over there does not mean you should lower your prices. Also, don’t take more than you can handle. We know you have a life to live.
Oook folks I just ran out of juice. This is all I can share with you. Take it to thought, Hope you been inspired.
Love ya! Love ya! =P
